The minions are a cinematic masterpiece.
For this opinion I have been ridiculed for YEARS! Yet, people ignore the great art of the minions and the philosophical depths it goes. It touches on so many different ideas!
Let us start with a simpler thing in the minions universe which isn’t too complex to grasp for people with a IQ under 140 (Unlike mine), The Minion movie starts with a existential theme inspired by the great works of Jean Paul-Satre. Many cannot pick up on this hint, but many of his works can be connected to themes in the minions movie.
At the start of the movie it is shown that the minions have a biologocial compass of sticking together and serving a leader; that leader being most often a ‘bad guy’. The minions are naturally drawn to bad guys. Once the introduction of that concept is over, the minions are in a ice cave. They suffer from depression and cannot find further meaning in life; This is a subtle nod to Jean Paul-Satre, who also had no meaning in life, coming from a time where the second world war had happend and him too being depressed. This could also be a reference to the great depression in america. (This is just the first 15-30 minutes of the movie, keep that in mind)
Three great minions step forward, wanting to re-gain that meaning in life! They go on to leave the cold desserts of the antarctic and row onto the sea, this is referencing several parts of the philosophic positivism. They go out in the big world, having a lot of hope and that paying off. As you can see, the minions manages to connect two kinds of philosophy that are generally different, which is why I enjoy that movie.
I will show you further how the minions is a cinematic masterpiece next time. There, I will be referencing slavery and more of the philosophic themes of positivism the movie continues to have in the second act. Sadly I have to stop for now, since the discord word limit doesnt allow more writing.
